Minimally invasive dentistry

For the right child and the right tooth, treatment may mean less drilling or numbing. We’ll help you understand the options and choose a plan together.

SDF (Silver Diamine Fluoride)

A liquid that takes 60 seconds to apply, and stops decay 80% of the time. No numbing, no drilling. Less fluoride than drinking a bottle of water.

Drawbacks: Yucky taste and black stain.

SMART fillings

Silver Modified Atraumatic Restorative Therapy. Also no numbing or sedation.

Hall Crown Technique

An option for selected baby molars that may avoid drilling and numbing.

Glass ionomer

A tooth-colored filling material that may suit some children and teeth.

Curodont

A peptide-based, drill-free treatment for early tooth decay, before a hole forms. It helps minerals rebuild weakened enamel and may help keep a small area of decay from becoming a filling.

Glass ionomer temporary crowns / strip crowns

Tooth-colored temporary crowns that can improve the look of baby teeth, especially front teeth with a hole from decay. For suitable teeth, we can place them without drilling.

Every child is different. These options are not appropriate for every tooth; sedation and general anesthesia remain available when needed.

Traditional dentistry

From routine prevention to treatment when it’s needed, we’ll work with you to find the right approach for your child.

Routine preventive care

Routine cleanings and exams starting at age one, with time to talk about prevention and building healthy habits at home.

Extractions

We can’t save every tooth. We offer extractions and traditional treatment, with sedation when needed.

Traditional fillings & restorations

We also offer traditional fillings and restorations, with nitrous oxide sedation when appropriate—for older children who are ready and able to manage treatment in the chair.

General anesthesia

When we’ve tried plans A, B, and C and your child still needs care, we can discuss general anesthesia. We’ll talk through your child’s needs and whether it’s the right next step.

ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder)

Dr. Lucas and Dr. Goldberg are both board-certified pediatric dentists with additional training in caring for children with special needs and anxiety, including children with autism spectrum disorder.
